Lately I’ve been much more into cakes that feel fun without needing perfectly smooth frosting or a ton of decorating. This Trick or Treat Chocolate Candy Cake fits that perfectly. The chocolate cake is super moist, the cookies and cream filling adds even more richness, and the top is finished with chopped Halloween candy and sprinkles. It’s also a really good way to use up leftover Halloween candy once the trick-or-treating is done.

The chocolate cake stays extra moist thanks to sour cream, milk, and a light chocolate milk soak. The filling is creamy with little bits of Halloween Oreos throughout, while the chocolate frosting keeps everything rich and classic. Then you get crunch, extra chocolate, and little surprises from all the candy on top.

The chocolate milk soak is the twist here. Each cake layer gets lightly brushed with sweet chocolate milk before the cake is assembled, adding extra moisture and another layer of chocolate flavor.

Chocolate cake mix: This gives you a reliable chocolate base, then the added sour cream, milk, eggs, and oil make it much richer than the standard box directions.
Sour cream: Adds moisture and gives the cake a softer, more tender texture.
Chocolate syrup: Mixes with milk and vanilla to create the chocolate milk soak for the cake layers.
Halloween Oreos: Chop them small so they fold easily into the filling and give you cookies-and-cream flavor in every bite.
Cream cheese: Adds a little tang to the filling and balances all the sweetness.
Cocoa powder: Use unsweetened cocoa powder for the frosting so it stays rich and chocolatey without becoming overly sweet.
Halloween candy: Use a mix of chopped candy and a few larger pieces on top. Oreo ghost chocolates and Kit Kats work really well, but almost anything goes.

Yes. Bake the cake layers a day ahead, let them cool completely, then wrap them tightly and keep them at room temperature or refrigerate them until you’re ready to assemble.
Brush on just enough to lightly moisten the surface. You don’t want to pour it over the cake or completely saturate the layers.
Absolutely. The Halloween version gives the filling a little seasonal color, but regular Oreos will taste exactly as good.
Chocolate candy works especially well with this cake. Kit Kats, mini peanut butter cups, M&M’s, chocolate-covered Oreos, and other bite-size candy are all good options.
Yes. Because the filling contains cream cheese and butter, keep the finished cake refrigerated. Let it sit at room temperature for a little while before serving so the cake and frosting can soften slightly.

Make this for a Halloween party and set it right next to the candy bowl. Cutting into a chocolate cake covered in actual trick-or-treat candy feels totally spot on.
Chocolate sprinkle cookies are the base for mini ice cream sundaes with all the fun toppings.
