Chocolate-covered Oreo sunflowers with a fun fall flavor inside!
Sunflower Oreos might be one of my favorite Oreo designs for fall. You get that bright yellow sunflower shape, the dark chocolate center, and then an entire seasonal or golden Oreo inside. Making both mini and regular versions together just makes the whole batch even cuter.
Flavor Profile
The flavor is a mix of creamy vanilla or apple cookie, sweet white chocolate, and a little richer dark chocolate in the center. Golden Oreos keep everything buttery and vanilla-forward, but you can also use a seasonal Oreo flavor in the larger molds to add another layer of fall flavor.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Chocolate-covered Oreos get a fall makeover with a bright sunflower design.
The sunflower mold gives each cookie detailed petals and a dark chocolate center.
A seasonal Oreo inside adds an extra layer of fall flavor with every bite.
Mini and regular molds let you make a mix of sizes for a fuller dessert spread.
The combination of creamy chocolate and crunchy Oreo cookies makes these just as fun to eat as they are to serve.
The Twist
The twist is making the sunflowers in two different sizes. Using both mini and regular Oreo molds turns one chocolate-covered cookie idea into a whole little sunflower patch.
Ingredient Highlights
Sunflower molds: Spinning Leaf sunflower Oreo molds come in mini and regular sizes, so you can use one size or combine both.
Dark chocolate melts: These create the contrasting center of each sunflower.
White chocolate melts: Tint these yellow to form the petals and coat the Oreo.
Yellow oil-based candy color: Oil-based coloring is important when working with melted chocolate so the coating stays smooth and doesn’t seize.
Oreos: Use Mini Golden Oreos for the smaller molds and regular Golden Oreos for the larger version.
Seasonal Oreos: A fall flavor like Apple Pie à la Mode can be swapped into the regular-size molds for a different flavor inside.
Place the sunflower molds on a flat, level surface.
Melt about 1/4 of the dark chocolate melts according to the package directions. Transfer the melted chocolate to a piping bottle.
Pipe the dark chocolate into the center of each sunflower mold. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes, or until completely set.
Melt the white chocolate melts according to the package directions. Stir in a small amount of yellow oil-based candy color until you reach a sunflower-yellow shade.
Spoon the yellow chocolate into each mold cavity, filling it about halfway.
Press an Oreo into the center of each cavity. Use Mini Golden Oreos for the mini molds and regular Golden Oreos or your favorite fall-flavored Oreos for the larger molds.
Cover the cookies with the remaining yellow chocolate, making sure the chocolate reaches around the sides of each Oreo. Gently tap the molds against the counter to release any air bubbles.
If an Oreo starts to float or rise, gently press it back down with the tip of a knife.
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
Carefully remove the sunflower Oreos from the molds and let them come to room temperature before serving.
FAQ
Can I make only the mini or regular Sunflower Oreos?
Absolutely. You can use whichever mold size you like. Making both just gives you a fun mix of smaller and larger flowers.
Do I have to use Golden Oreos?
No. Golden Oreos keep the flavor light and vanilla-forward, but other Oreo flavors can work as long as they fit inside the mold.
Why does the candy color need to be oil-based?
Regular liquid food coloring can cause melted chocolate to seize. An oil-based candy color blends much more smoothly into chocolate coatings.
How do I keep the Oreo from floating up?
After adding the cookie, gently press it into the chocolate before covering it. If it starts to rise after you add the top layer, use the tip of a knife to gently push it back down.
How should I store Sunflower Oreos?
Store them in an airtight container in a cool room. If your kitchen is especially warm, you can refrigerate them and then let them come back to room temperature before serving.
Sprinkle of Fun
Make a whole batch for a fall party and arrange the mini and regular Sunflower Oreos together on a platter so they look like a little field of sunflowers.
