As the back-to-school season approaches (seems faster every year!), there’s nothing better than starting the day with a super fun breakfast that kids will love. Enter these Apple Jacks Waffles—a playful twist on a classic breakfast that combines the nostalgic flavor of Apple Jacks cereal with the comfort of warm, crispy waffles. Best of all, they freeze really well making it the perfect recipe for those busy school mornings when you want to pull something quick from the freezer. The waffles are easy to prepare and the Apple Jacks cereal adds a playful crunch and subtle sweetness that is sure to make these a new family favorite.
To get started, you’ll need to gather your ingredients: all-purpose flour, finely crushed Apple Jacks cereal, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. The key to the waffles’ unique flavor lies in the Apple Jacks cereal, which is finely crushed and mixed into the batter. This infuses the waffles with the cereal’s signature apple-cinnamon flavor. It totally brings me back to the days of watching Saturday morning cartoons with my sister- do kids still do that? We had MAYBE 2 choices of cartoons to watch, but now with streaming I’m sure there are hundreds!
Back to the waffles…begin by preheating your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. While the waffle iron heats up, mix your dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, crushed Apple Jacks, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring just until everything is combined. Don’t worry if the batter is a bit lumpy—those lumps help give the waffles a light and airy texture. This simple batter comes together in no time, so you can even get your kids involved.
Once your waffle iron is ready, lightly spray it with non-stick spray, and pour in the batter. The batter should fill about two-thirds of the waffle iron, allowing it room to spread as it cooks. Close the iron and let the waffles cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually no more than five minutes. You’ll know they’re done when they’re golden brown and crispy on the outside, with that irresistible waffle aroma filling your kitchen. I love how quick and efficient waffles are…5 minutes! Perfect for getting breakfast on the table fast before everyone rushes out the door.
For the finishing touches, serve the waffles immediately while they’re still warm and crispy. A pat of butter or a generous spread of apple butter makes such a delicious addition, complementing the apple notes in the waffles. If your family prefers maple syrup, that’s a great option too, though it might slightly overshadow the Apple Jacks flavor. To bring out the apple and cinnamon notes even more, try adding a sprinkle of apple pie spice or cinnamon sugar on top. And for an extra crunch, don’t forget to top with some additional crushed Apple Jacks.
These Apple Jacks Waffles are more than just a fun twist on a classic breakfast; they’re a way to start the school day with a little excitement! The combination of a classic cereal with the irresistible sweetness of waffles is sure to become a hit in your household. Whether you’re serving these waffles for back to school or a special weekend treat, they’re sure to be something everyone looks forward to. So choose your toppings, crush your cereal, and create a new morning tradition that the whole family will love!
