Black Forest Cookie Sand-witches

If you’re like me and obsessed with The Craft (seriously, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it!), then you’re going to love these Black Forest Cookie Sand-witches. Inspired by the movie’s dark and mysterious vibe, I wanted to create a cookie that felt as bold and moody as the iconic film. These cookies have a rich dark chocolate base with a cherry almond buttercream filling, giving them just the right mix of spooky and sweet. They’re perfect for Halloween and bring that classic 90s rebellion with every bite. Trust me, they’ll work some magic on your taste buds!

Ingredients

Scale 1x2x3x

• 1 box dark chocolate cake mix
• 2 tbsp espresso powder
• 2 eggs
• 1/2 c vegetable oil
• 1/3 c dark chocolate chips
• 1 stick of salted butter
• 2 c powdered sugar
• 1/2 tsp almond extract
• 2–3 tbsp maraschino cherry juice
• 1/4 c mini chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a medium bowl, combine the cake mix, espresso powder, eggs, and vegetable oil. Once mixed, fold in the dark chocolate chips.
3. Using a small 1” cookie scoop add scoops of the dough to the prepared baking sheets 2” apart. If you don’t have a cookie scoop they’re about 1 tbsp size scoops. You’ll get about 22 cookies or 11 cookie sandwiches.
4. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until set. These are best on the softer side, which is ideal for a cookie sandwich. Let the cookies set on the pan for 10-15 minutes and then move to wire racks to cool completely.
5. Once cool, prepare the frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter until smooth. Either use a hand mixer or stand mixer. Add in half of the powdered sugar and mix. Add in the rest of the powdered sugar, almond extract, and cherry just and mix until totally combined. Fold in the mini chocolate chips.
6. Place one cookie upside down and pipe or scoop frosting in the center. Top it with another cookie and lightly press down. Repeat with the remaining cookies.

If you’re a fan of the 90’s cult classic movie, The Craft, this recipe is sure to bring some witchy nostalgia to your kitchen. I think I’ve seen this movie 100 times, no lie! These Black Forest Cookie Sand-witches are totally inspired by the movie…I felt like they brought the dark and mysterious vibes while still being completely delicious. They have a rich dark chocolate base and a cherry almond buttercream filling. For me, The Craft is the best mix of Halloween and 90’s-style rebellion, so I just had to include them in my Fall cookie sandwich series. Betcha they’re gonna cast a spell on your taste buds, wink wink.

The base of this decadent sandwich begins with a dark chocolate cake mix, amped up by espresso powder to create that deep, almost magical flavor. The espresso enhances the richness of the chocolate and seems more decadent to me. These cookies are soft, almost brownie-like, which makes them ideal for sandwiching. The subtle bitterness of the dark chocolate chips also plays into the moody, gothic theme of The Craft.

After baking, these cookies get a pop of cherry in the filling that brings in the essence of a Black Forest cake—almond extract, maraschino cherry juice, and mini chocolate chips. The buttercream is silky, with just enough cherry juice to give it that blood-red hue, perfect for Halloween.

The best part about these Black Forest Cookie Sand-witches? They’re incredibly simple to make but feel super fancy, making them ideal for Halloween parties or a spooky snack at home. These cookies are perfect for creating a little drama at your Halloween table without much effort, because they’re just so simple to put together. Plus, who doesn’t love a cookie sandwich with soft cookies and a gooey center?

Alright, so let’s get ready to channel your inner witch and create some kitchen magic. I’m telling you, these cookie sandwiches have a spellbinding combo that you’ll want to make again and again. They’re also the perfect treat to enjoy while re-watching The Craft, and yes I’ve already watched it again this year!

Whether you’re a longtime fan of the movie or just love the idea of spooky treats, these Black Forest Cookie Sand-witches are a great way to celebrate Halloween. Rich, indulgent, and just a little bit magical, they’re the ultimate tribute to The Craft—because after all, magic and chocolate are the perfect combination.
