I love working with chocolate, and Halloween is the best time to experiment with new techniques and products. I got to try a bunch of items from Hu like- organic chocolate bars, bites, and baking chips, and some fun seasonal recipe ideas. Here’s my take on it all…
Hu, pronounced like the first syllable of “human,” has an interesting story that started long before its chocolate appeared on grocery store shelves.
The company was founded in 2012 by Jason Karp, Jordan Brown, and Jessica Karp. It originally began as Hu Kitchen, a restaurant and market in New York City focused on foods made with recognizable ingredients.
While developing food for the restaurant, the founders wanted chocolate that followed the same philosophy. Rather than settling for the options available, they created their own.
The chocolate eventually became popular enough to grow into its own product line. In 2021, Mondelēz International, the company behind brands such as OREO and Cadbury, acquired Hu.
Today, Hu is known for its premium chocolates made without refined sugar, palm oil, or artificial sweeteners. Many of its products start with three ingredients: organic cacao, organic unrefined coconut sugar, and organic cocoa butter.
I’ve seen these bars at Fresh Market and always wanted to try them. I was lucky enough to get samples of a few- Simple Dark Chocolate, Salty Dark Chocolate, and options with nut butter fillings. The dark are made with organic ingredients and sweetened with unrefined coconut sugar rather than traditional refined cane sugar. They also have milk chocolate varieties for people who prefer something creamier. I am totally a milk chocolate person, but I was excited to give the dark ones a try.
This is a great alternative Halloween treat to snack on. They were rich and I loved the nut butter-filled flavors. Give them a try during a Halloween movie marathon for something a little healthier.

The product I was especially interested in trying was the Hu chocolate baking chips. Since I bake so much, I’m always curious about different chocolate products and how they work in recipes.
The brand offers two varieties:
Dark Chocolate Baking Chips: Made with 65% cacao, these have a richer chocolate profile that’s a great match for cookies, brownies, and chocolate-covered treats.
Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips: Made with 45% cacao, these offer a sweeter option for traditional chocolate chip recipes.
Both varieties contain just three ingredients: organic cacao, organic unrefined coconut sugar, and organic cocoa butter. They’re also certified organic, Fairtrade, and vegan.
I found these really easy to work with. I would totally use them in a healthier cookie dough or in a snack mix.

One of Hu’s creative Halloween recipes is its Spooky Spiderweb Chocolate-Covered Pretzels.
I love this trend and think it’s super easy to incorporate Hu chocolate.
You arrange pretzel sticks into a star shape, then pipe melted Hu Dark Chocolate Gems or Baking Chips over the pretzels to create a spiderweb design. Before the chocolate sets, add Halloween sprinkles for a little extra color (I highly recommend this, ha!)
I love the idea of combining salty pretzels with rich chocolate. It’s a classic pairing, but the spiderweb design gives it a Halloween twist.
The spiderweb pretzels aren’t the only seasonal idea Hu is sharing. The brand has several other recipes that offer some inspo for Halloween baking and entertaining.
The Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Cups combine two classic dessert flavors, peanut butter and chocolate, in a sweet little treat.
Hu also shared a char-boo-terie board, putting a Halloween spin on the traditional snack board. It’s a fun concept for anyone hosting a party who wants to include a combination of chocolates and other treats.
For something with a fall flavor, there’s also High-Protein Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I can’t wait to try this one! Pumpkin and chocolate are a great match, especially this time of year, and it’s another way to use chocolate chips.
I appreciate that these ideas go beyond ordinary Halloween candy. They give you a chance to be trendy and still creative.
Hu products are sold at major retailers nationwide, although the selection can vary by store.
According to the company, its chocolate is available in approximately 34,000 stores across the United States. You can use the store locator on the official Hu website to find nearby retailers and explore the current product lineup.
Hu offers a delicious way to put a twist on Halloween this year. I really enjoyed trying more of the lineup, and I love that the brand is sharing creative seasonal recipes. If you’re looking to mix up your Halloween sweets or treat yourself to something a little different, Hu is worth checking out.
Chocolate sprinkle cookies are the base for mini ice cream sundaes with all the fun toppings.
