Turnovers

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup seedless raspberry preserves or jam
  • ½ cup Halloween frosted animal cookies, roughly crushed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Vanilla glaze and topping

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Halloween nonpareils

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  3. Lightly roll out the thawed puff pastry on a floured surface. Cut into 6–8 evenly sized rectangles.
  4. Spread a small amount of the cream cheese mixture over one half of each rectangle, leaving a ½-inch border around the edges.
  5. Spoon approximately 1 tablespoon of raspberry preserves over the cream cheese filling.
  6. Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of crushed Halloween frosted animal cookies over the preserves. The cookies should be roughly crushed into small pieces, not fine crumbs, so they add some texture to the filling.
  7. Fold the empty half of each pastry rectangle over the filling. Gently press the edges together, then seal with a fork.
  8. Transfer the turnovers to the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
  9. Brush the tops with beaten egg and cut a small slit in the center of each turnover to allow steam to escape.
  10. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the turnovers are puffed and golden brown.
  11. Allow the turnovers to cool for 10–15 minutes before adding the glaze.
  12. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon of milk, and vanilla extract. Add additional milk a little at a time until the glaze reaches your desired consistency.
  13. Drizzle or spread the vanilla glaze over each turnover. Immediately decorate with Halloween nonpareils.
