Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 1 box Halloween Funfetti cake mix
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup salted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs + 1 extra yolk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup sour cream

Orange Creamsicle Frosting

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream (plus more if needed)
  • Orange food coloring (gel works best)

Toppings

  • Halloween nonpareils
  • Bat cookie cutter
  • Ghost royal icing pieces
  • Halloween confetti sprinkles
  • Candy corn

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 13×9-inch pan with baking spray. In a large bowl, mix together the cake mix, milk, butter, oil, eggs, vanilla, salt, and sour cream until smooth. Pour into the prepared pan and bake according to the package directions. Let the cake cool completely.
  2. Beat the softened butter in a large mixing bowl for 2 minutes until smooth and creamy. Add powdered sugar gradually, 1 cup at a time, mixing on low until combined. Stir in the vanilla, orange extract, and 2 tablespoons of cream. Beat on high for 2–3 minutes until fluffy. If you want a softer frosting, add another tablespoon of cream. Tint with orange food coloring until you get your perfect Halloween shade.
  3. Frost the cooled cake evenly. To create a sprinkle “bat,” press the cookie cutter gently into the frosting. Fill the inside of the cutter with nonpareils, pressing them in lightly, then lift the cutter away slowly. Scatter ghost royal icing pieces and Halloween confetti sprinkles across the top. Finish with a border of candy corn around the edges.
  4. Slice into squares.
